The 9th edition of the Korean Film Festival in Canada to beheld at the McCord Museum in downtown Montreal For the first time ever, the Korean Film Festival in Canada is working in partnership with the McCord Museum to bring its annual offering to viewers.
Montreal, Quebec, April 25, 2022 – The 9th edition of the Korean Film Festival in Canada (KFFC) will be held as an in-person event from May 26 to 28 at the McCord Museum and will explore the theme of “Environment: Sustainability and Resilience.” This theme will continue into the 10th edition in 2023. The 2022 edition comprises four main events:
•Film Line-up: We will be presenting a curated list of films that demonstrate our mission and theme at the McCord Museum (690 Sherbrooke St. West, Montreal), and a prefestival screening at Casa d'Italia
•Artists and Industry Networking: We are inviting film industry professionals and artists, in partnership with Multi-Monde Film Company, to gather at the McCord Museum and make connections.
•GEW: Formerly known as DIY-G, GEW, Gallery East-West, is an online gallery. In conjunction with the festival’s theme, this year’s invited artists are KIM Youngmi, Masoud RAOUF, Cheong-Hoon KIM from Canada and Korea, and more to come.
•Events: Q&A with the directors, round table talks, mentorships and workshops for emerging artists.
KFFC is proud to invite the public to discover rare films at this new venue. “With the growth of our organization, we have moved our festival date to the spring season, taking into account Asian Heritage Month in the month of May. We are building a creative playground for local artists and communities, without any limiting boundaries,” said Mi-Jeong Lee, Artistic Director and founder of Arts East-West/Korean Film Festival, and the Asian Art Publication Lab. Lee herself is an independent artist and lecturer on Korean arts and cinema at Université de Montréal and King Sejong Institute of Montreal.
For the past several years, KFFC has been reshaping and articulating its vision as an artist-run, practice-based research and creation organization. It will celebrate Asian Heritage Month in Canada through the May film festival, a timeframe that will apply to subsequent editions of the festival as well. The organization is also undertaking a major infrastructural transition, where second and next-generation artists are actively engaging in its projects along with senior organizers who will inherit this legacy and run the festival.
In response to the public’s support of previous festivals, the 9th edition will continue to connect East and West beyond all borders. Thanks to the ever-growing popularity of the Korean wave (Hallyu), KFFC is able to pursue this important project, where viewers can not only (re)discover cinematographic works from Korea and Canada, but can also appreciate international works.
Following our environmental consciousness theme, most of the festival’s materials will be produced digitally. More details of this year’s programs and projects will be announced in May.
