Evening walk with mom

Jun Kim(Poet)

Translated by Jun Kim
The evening, empty and still
We go for a walk after dinner
around the park, and I tap my full belly
The place is a little ominous.
We can hear each other’s breathing,
the awkward silence
We walk the same pace naturally,
she takes my hand
When I was a child, I took her hand
swung it high to the sky. Now she swings
my hand like a child
looking at me with a playful expression
Still in silence, moving our feet
A walk without end
suddenly she asks
“Are you all right?”
All of sudden, I am thirsty,
a mass of warmth passes from her hand to mine
My neck tightens, a sadness bursting
The intense breathing slows down,
the once stirring arms are barely shaking now
along our steps.

My mom’s sadness
lights up the street light in the park and
looks down into the corner of my heart.
